The Grilled Cheese From 'The Chef Show'

I’ve been devouring a few episodes of John Favreau's, The Chef Show. If you enjoy watching food shows on Netflix, this one is for you. In episode 2 Favreau and friend Chef Roy Choi take you on a journey of grilled cheese. Pretty much right in our strike zone for our test kitchen.

They are cooking in their diner or on a flat top griddle surface. Those ovens where the heat permeates the sandwich inside and out, allowing for perfect browning of the bread while leaving the inside of the sandwich gooey, cheesy and just perfect.

Well our Baking Steel Griddle is going to do just that, but from the comfort of your home. Today we are recreating that epic grilled cheese from John Favreau’s movie - 'Chef'. I hope we do it proud…

Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Ingredients

2 slices bread

3 slices cheddar yellow

3 slices cheddar white

1 oz. gruyere, thinly sliced

1/4 stick butter - unsalted

olive oil for the Griddle

Directions

Position your Baking Steel on the stovetop. Preheat on medium-high heat for 10-15 minutes, for a surface temperature of 300-325 degrees F. To test the surface, sprinkle a small amount of butter on top of the surface; it should begin to bubble assertively, but should not turn brown or black.

  1. Aggressively butter one side of each slice of bread with your softened butter.

  2. Place one slice of bread, butter side down, on the griddle. Layer the top with cheese. Place the other slice butter side down.

  3. Cook for about 2 minutes, or until golden and crispy on the bottom and cheese softly melted on top. Place second slice on top of cheese. Flip with a metal spatula, and cook the second side until equally crispy and the cheese is perfectly melty. Remove from the griddle, and enjoy immediately.
